金融工程一直是近年来留学的爆红专业之一，这是一门综合了金融学、数学和计算机科学的交叉学科，其课程通常由大学的商学院、数学系和工程学院联合授课。金融工程有很多种名称，比如Financial Engineering金融工程, Financial Mathematics金融数学，Mathematical Finance数学金融，Computational Finance计算金融等，都是以数学工具来建立金融市场模型和解决金融问题的学科。
在美国排名顶尖的学校中开设金融工程专业的学校相对纯金融来说更多，比如Columbia，Chicago，Cornell等名校就是只有金融工程专业而没有金融专业。与纯金融相比，金工专业更加看重申请人的数理背景，正如芝加哥大学所说“要申请金融工程，不懂金融我们可以教，但是不懂数学就请回去学会了再来”。金融工程硕士的学习时间一般为全日制一年，就业好，薪资高，申请难度较大。 绝大部分金工项目属于STEM专业，申请3年OPT，H1B工作签证等机会比传统商科类专业容易。
